History of Senegal:

 

  •  300AD-19 century: Black Africans were in control of Senegal

  •  10 century: Islamic merchants introduced the Senegalese to the Islamic people 

  • 1400s: Portugese first traded with the Senegalese

  • 1500s: Portugese were replaced by the French, English, and Dutch

  • 16-19 centuries: Slave trade was established; peanuts began to be mass-produced

  • 1800s: France conquered Senegal calling it French West Africa

  • 1848: Slavery ended

Religion

Ebola Outbreak:

  • The first case of ebola was on Augest 29, 2014

  • Senegal then stopped all trade with other ebola-infected countries

  • Last infected person was cured of the ebola virus in Senegal in September of 2014

 

94% of population is Muslim

5% of population is Christian

1% of populaion follows aborigional religions

Many Senegalese, no matter what religion they follow, wear gri gri - charms to protect themselves from sickness and evil spirits.
